Why can't I just hose off my solar panels?
A hose will get rid of surface dirt, and it’ll do a similar job to what the rain would do. However, imagine if you didn’t wash your car for an entire year. Would the rain clean off everything? As much as I’d love it to … probably not. There’s a lovely layer of grime that slowly builds up over time and water alone just isn’t enough to remove it.
Additionally, stubborn debris such as pollen, bug spots, bird droppings, algae, tree sap, and lichen (which is everywhere on the Central Coast), will need physical agitation to be removed. These types of debris can significantly affect the efficiency and lifespan of your system. Enter the soft-bristled, carbon-fibre, purified-water-fed pole!
The soft-bristled brush is tough enough to scrub away stubborn debris, while being soft enough not to cause any damage to your energy-producing wonders.
Can you pressure clean solar panels?
We wouldn’t recommend pressure cleaning your solar panels! There is simply far too much chance of causing damage.
Especially for debris such as lichen, the pressure cleaner might be tempting. While the soft-bristled brush does require a good bit of elbow grease to scrub off debris such as lichen, there’s no chance of causing damage. You can also apply a lichen-treatment spray to help remove larger lichen patches.
The purified water is filtered by a portable filtration system. Since the water used to clean your solar panels with is essentially rainwater, it leaves no spots behind. Have you ever washed your car and then forgot to towel-dry the windows? What happens? Water-drop spots everywhere! So by using purified water, no spots are left behind.

The right tools for the job...
The carbon-fibre pole is also essential, especially for larger solar panel systems. When there are two or more rows of solar panels, you need a long enough pole to be able to reach the panels from far away (no walking on the panels!).
Other materials are very heavy for the length you need. However, by using carbon-fibre poles, you can clean all day without excess fatigue, or getting tired and accidentally letting go of a pole and damaging something. The bottom edge of your panels can also collect debris build-up. While being mostly aesthetic, any time where that bottom edge can be safely reached, we recommend tidying that up as well.
