“Should I wait till after winter to get my windows cleaned?” It’s a very common question. Whether you’re a mum, dad, proud homeowner, or the task has simply fallen into your lap this year, window cleaning is a task that we don’t want to do more than we have to. As such, is there actually a better time of year to get your windows cleaned to make the best use of your time and money?
In our window cleaning business, we see that spring and summer are indeed our busiest seasons. On the other hand, windows do get dirty all year round, so you should feel confident cleaning them anytime they need it.
If we break things down though, different times of the year can indeed be better or worse for window cleaning, depending on what your specific needs are. To find out what you should do, let’s discuss what exactly affects how dirty your windows get. We’ll look at each season and see which one is the best choice for window cleaning.
Summer Window Cleaning
In summer, there are more insects around leaving spots and debris on the windows. Especially if you find yourself swatting flies on your windows, that’ll leave a lot of marks. More insects means more spiders as well, so the cobwebs build up faster in the warmer months.
Additionally, in the lead up to Christmas, we find that people are having family around and want things to be ship-shape for their guests. I find myself entertaining more during summer, so it’s a good time of year to make sure the house is looking its best.
A lot of trees also drop debris over summer, so a lot of gutter cleaning happens in February, and pairing that with window cleaning can be cost effective. With the debris dropping less from February onwards as well, the windows can stay cleaner longer.
If you’re getting professional window cleaning, you’ll also beat the Spring rush with your 6-monthly clean if you get things taken care of at the end of Summer. Your 6-monthly clean might rock around in August, and you’ll always find the perfect booking you need before Spring.
Autumn Window Cleaning
In Autumn, the weather begins to cool down and so the spiders become less active. This is the perfect time to get rid of all the cobwebs. The cobwebs will take longer to come back if you clear them all in Autumn. They’ll always come back, but if you’re only clearing them once or twice a year, it’s the perfect time for it.
If you’re getting your windows cleaned every 6 months, this means the next round of cleaning would be in September-November, which should largely carry you through to Christmas. If you’re getting professional window cleaning, you’ll also beat the Christmas rush with your 6-monthly clean if you get things taken care of at the beginning of autumn, which would place your 6-monthly clean in September or October.
Winter Window Cleaning
In winter, you’re spending much more time inside due to the cold weather, so that means more fingerprints and dust collect on the windows from all the extra humans inside each day.
Mold also grows faster in the damp conditions in winter – mold loves moisture – so you’ve really got to be careful of that building up. Especially with windows that are hidden behind shutters, it can be easy to forget about them, and thus the mold can sprout. And that’s not good for anyone’s health. It’d be ideal to wait till after winter to get all the mold cleaned off, but that isn’t always practical as by that stage, it may be everywhere!
Also, March and April are the wettest months of the year. Whilst rain doesn’t make your windows dirty, what can make your windows dirty is where the rain splashes the ground and flicks mud up against low windows. As such, you might like to get your windows cleaned in May after the rain stops, especially if you have a lot of windows that get splashed by mud.
Spring Window Cleaning
Spring, other than the Christmas rush, is our busiest time of year as a window cleaning business. Spring cleaning, the weather warming up, entertaining guests more, coming out of our shells and enjoying life! Spring is the time of year to be alive. This is probably where the idea of not getting your windows cleaned in winter comes from – your big clean happens in the Spring Clean. So with us starting to spend more time in the garden and entertaining with the weather getting warmer and the days getting longer, it’s a great time to get your windows cleaned.
So what’s the verdict?
Our climate here on the Central Coast NSW Australia lends itself towards window cleaning anytime of year. The things that get windows the most dirty – like dirt, dust, and fingerprints – are there all year round, so it doesn’t really matter what time of year you get your windows cleaned. That being said, there are specific benefits to each season, so at the end of the day as long as you’re getting your windows cleaned regularly, you can pick the time of year that works best with your schedule and the needs of your home and lifestyle.
A Month-By-Month Guide to When You Should Get Professional Window Cleaning Done
Remember: any time of year is a good time for window cleaning. Dust, dirt, fingerprints, and mold are there all year round. However, there can be specific benefits to each month.
- January: If you couldn’t book someone in during the busy end-of-year season, this is a great back-up option.
- February: A lot of trees drop debris over summer, so we get a lot of gutter cleaning work in February, and pairing that with window cleaning can be cost effective and with the debris dropping less, the windows can stay cleaner longer.
- March: Same as February. Things can also be quiet for us in March, so we often run sales.
- April: Easter long weekend – get the windows cleaned for family and friends visiting.
- May: The rain will ease up from now on, a great time of year if you have windows that get splashed by mud from the rain. Perfect for a 6-monthly clean if you get your windows cleaned before Christmas as well.
- June: Perfect for a 6-monthly clean if you get your windows cleaned before Christmas.
- July: Still a good option for a 2nd clean if you get your windows cleaned before Christmas as well. A quieter month of the year as well for us, so we may be running sales.
- August: If mold is a problem in your house, now is a good time towards the end of the cold damp months.
- September: Spring cleaning time. Also a good time of year to clear the mold as the weather is warming up now. Don’t want to give the mold a chance to spread.
- October: Get in now before the end-of-year rush.
- November: Have your windows sparkling for the end-of-year gatherings
- December: Same as November.
